SAIDA
Sidon or Saida is one of the oldest
cities in Lebanon and one of its largest. It goes back to at
least 4000 B.C, and was one of the most important Phoenician
cities in Lebanon. It lies at 45 km south of Beirut and offers
many sight-seeing attractions. It is famous for its crusader
sea castle built with sandstone and with granite and marble
columns recuperated from ancient Roman monuments of Sidon. Near
the citadel stretch the ancient souks of the city where one
can visit the very well preserved 17th century caravansérail
of the Franks, the Bab el Saray mosque dating back to 1201,
and the soap museum, to cite only a few places. |
