> BAALBECK
At 85 km north east of Beirut
lie some of the most magnificient temples of the Roman world
in the ancient town of Baalbeck. A drive from the coast across
the range of mountain Lebanon through the lush Bekaa valley
takes us to discover the spectacular temples of Jupiter, Bacchus
and Venus that were built some 2000 years ago. The town was
then known as Heliopolis and its temples were amongst the most
visited in the empire. One of them, the temple of Jupiter, was
one of the largest temples ever built by the Romans. And now
these temples are amongst the most preserved Roman temples one
could find in the Mediterranean. Their visit was a must then
and still is now! |
